Sealers," How to Seal Coat Your Timber Resinzwood Multi Sealer. This may seem straightforward: You would mix up the Resinzwood Multi Sealer and pour it over the timber, and she would be all good, but there is a bit more to it than that, as sealing is a critical part of making the perfect table or art installation. There are a few things you should ask yourself and check off. Hence, you understand the whole point of using Resinzwood Sealer for sealing timber or other porous materials like concrete floors, raw gemstones, and stonework.

Multi Sealer FAQ's Q & A

  • Firstly, why is it so important to use a multi-sealer on your timber slab before you put your top coats over it? - Answer: Sealing your timber has a few key functions. Firstly, by sealing the timber, you mitigate the risk of your timber bending, twisting, and cracking, for example. If you do not apply a sealer, all these things can happen. When we get our timber slab, we cut it to size, plane it to the right thickness, and then sand it, and many of us tend to stop there and maybe come back the day after to carry on. The problem here is after you have put your timber through all of that, it has released a lot of stress as the pores of the timber have been opened up, giving them the freedom to do as they wish. Now if you are in a damp, wet, or even dry and sunny place, your timber will react by either sucking in moisture or releasing moisture in hot weather, causing it to twist and play up for you. This is one of the key reasons you must permanently seal your timber as soon as you have planned and sand it to close up those pores so it is not releasing as much moisture or sucking moisture in.
  • Why should I keep Timber out of the Sun? Answer: If you leave your timber in the sun, it will heat up on one face, and you will notice it is expelling moisture on the opposite face, allowing it to move, split, or crack open. Keep your timber out of direct sunlight as much as possible, especially after planning and sanding it.
  • How much sealer needs to be applied? Answer: You should use a few sealer

coats until the surface looks shiny without any dry-looking patches. Pay special attention to the end grain, which dries 15 times faster than the face grain.
  • End Grain is the pattern of wood grain that appears when wood is cut across the growth rings of a tree. For example, in the image, two Elm cookie-cut pieces of tree trunk are cut across the grain, exposing the ring lines.
  • It is essential to apply the sealer to both sides of your timber to ensure equal absorption and expelling of moisture, maintaining a nice flat slab. This does not always mean the slab will stay flat and accurate, as it may contain more moisture than what you have anticipated or been told by your timber merchant. It is essential not to use timber with an M/C (moisture content) above 12 percent and an optimal M/C of 6 to 9%. Here at Resinzwood, we sell kiln-dried timbers and can do so for you.
  • Now, once you have completed your seal coating and are satisfied with the job and how it looks, you are ready to look at light sand before applying your topcoats. Please note that when you use your Ultra Fast Topcoat, there may still be areas of the timber that will release air. This can be unpleasant at times, but we all go through it at one time or another. I will write a separate post about this when I have some spare time, as it is an interesting topic and can help you save time and money.

Method Of Using Resinzwood Multi-Sealer

When using our multi-sealer, please wear a protective carbon filter mask. This is the only solvent-based product we use, recommend, and sell, and it is the best cost-effective solution on the NZ market.

  • Make sure you have your PPE gear, Carbon mask, Eye protection, Rubber Gloves, and an apron.
  • Calculate how much product you need based on 1mm per square meter per coat using the Resinzwood Resin Calculator
  • Gently mix up the part A and B in equal amounts, as this is a 1 to 1 or / 1:1 by volume
  • Now pour over your work/wood slab and use your hands or a brush to move across your project. Ensure you have only a thin layer on each application, avoiding pooling in deeper crevices.
  • I like to do both sides at once to ensure equal absorption. So once you do the bottom side with a light coat of Resinzwood Multi-Sealer, leave it for a few minutes, use a window washer squeegee to wipe the excess into a container, flip the slab over, and do the face side. This ensures both sides absorb at the same rate.
