In this tutorial by resinzwood, you will learn how to deal with Epoxy Resin Drips—you know, those pesky drips you get on the bottom edge of the table you have flood coated. Most people sand them off, ending up with discoloration on the edge as they have sanded back to the wood; then, when you re-resin where the resin drips were you get an unsightly look and feel along the edge. As outlined in this tutorial, dealing with resin drips on tables is a straightforward fix. However, let us say you have a table leg, for example, that is shaped differently. This is a tad harder as you must do a lot of hand sanding and polishing. We will cover this below as well.
Method to remove Epoxy Resin Drips
- Once you are ready to do your flood coat on your top surface, look at the edge of your table and visualize where the point of gravity takes control that will form the epoxy resin drips line.
- Now grab a couple of rolls of high-quality painter's tape, sticking it along this edge at the point the drips will form. Run the tape around all the edges, putting it on two to three layers thick.
- Proceed on to do your floodcoat and you will see that the drips are forming on the edge where the tape is.
- Once the table is fully cured, sand at a 30-degree angle to remove most of the epoxy resin drips. Then, pull off the tape layers, leaving a nice, clean edge without having sanded the wood. The key thing here is to ensure that you do not sand past your first layer of tape, as that is protecting the bottom edge.
- You may have scuffed the resin on this bottom edge a bit, but you can buff it to perfection using wet and dry sandpaper and a polishing pad with cutting and polishing compounds.
- If a rounded or shaped item is leaving big epoxy resin drips in a highly visible area, you need to very carefully hand sand down to the underlying resin coat without going too deep, then polish with compounds for a perfect finish.
