How to Flood Coat a Board with Ultra-Fast Resin? When you are thinking about doing a flood coat, you want to get it right on your board, table, or other artistic project the first time. As a business owner and crafter of New Zealand's most audacious theme tables handcrafted from the exquisite natural wonder of our national Taonga Swamp Kauri, we cannot afford to use anything less than Resinzwood High-Performance epoxy resins. Resinzwood has spent tens of thousands of dollars testing resins from across the globe and locally made products until we decided to make our unique blends right here in New Zealand and have some imported products modified to suit New Zealand's harsh conditions. For all of your top-coating floodcoats, as they are commonly referred to, the best resins to use are the Resinzwood Ultra-Fast and the Resinzwood 2: 1 Tabletop Bar Top epoxy resin. Of the two resins, the Tabletop Resin Ultra Fast made right here is my and our client's preferred option due to its fast curing and very high hardness once fully cured.
If you follow my directions outlined in this tutorial, you will get perfect results every single time. I have made all the mistakes you can think of, so you do not have to. Method to Flood Coat / Top Pour
- Lightly sand your project to allow the top layer to adhere better; this is called making a mechanical bond. Typically, I use 180-grit or 240-grit sandpaper, then vacuum off the dust particles and wipe. You can use the likes of Isopropyl if you wish to, but generally speaking, it is not required
- The Resin Calculator can be found at this link or on our main website page. You will aim for 4-5mm per square meter on average. Some companies will tell you to use less, giving you a false representation of what is required for a perfect finish
- Mix the resin that you have pre-warmed in a hot basin. Important factors here are only for preheating the Part A resin component. You do not have to do this if your resin has been kept in a hot resin room at up to 25 °C. If you are using our Ultra Fast Resin, you must mix this quickly and complete your application within ten minutes, as the working time is very short.
- Ensure your board is as warm as possible, as you do not want to pour warm to hot resin on a cold board or table.
- Brush, or my preference lately is to use your hands to rub a thick layer around the outside edges to create a slip layer. A slip layer ensures that once you torch the resin, you will end up with a perfectly flat edge. If you do not do this process, you will end up with novice-looking run lines on your finished piece. Using a brush is sometimes necessary when you have a natural, rough edge you want to encapsulate lightly.
- Make sure your board is flat and level so that your flood coat builds up to its level of thickness before flowing off all sides.
- Pour most of your resin into the centre and work it to the outside edges. You can use your hand to pat the resin out instead of using a wipe motion, as this will give you a much better and even distribution of the flood coat product.
- Use a heat gun or flame torch to heat the resin or pop bubbles. This also helps the resin thin slightly and move easily across the piece you are working on. Use long strokes across your work, avoiding having the flame in constant contact with the resin, or you may burn and damage the flood coat.
- The resin will self-level and be perfect every time
- Use your hand or brush along with the flame torch to go over the outside edges
- Leave to cure, and it will be perfect, just like our Passionart Resinzwood crafts
