It amazes me how some statements are promoted as gospel that, if followed, can lead to very expensive outcomes. Below are a few examples of such statements that should not be taken as 100% factual.

• You can rest assured that you can pour up to two inches with a deep pour and be at ease knowing that it'll cure properly and won't crack - No, this is not true! - Many brands of epoxy resin, including our Ocean Cast Epoxy, cannot safely be poured into a large river table without running the chance of failure at 50mm thick. For example, we recommend pouring up to 40mm deep in a single go in conditions below 23 °C room temperature with air movement. We have poured our Ocean Cast epoxy to a depth of 165mm in a single shot, while maintaining the resin temperature at 14 to 20 °C for 36 hours, then fully curing at 27.5 °C room temperature for the following 10 hours. This comes down to knowing how to push the boundaries, and you only ever want to do that with the guidance of any resin manufacturer.
• You can pour multiple layers to add further depth by letting the previous layer cure partially (often about 4 to 10 hours) and then pouring your next layer over it. NO, this is not exactly true - This can be done with some resins like our Ocean Cast epoxy, but there are limitations that many other brands of epoxy will face in this scenario. The problem is the exothermic reaction: the resin cures at an optimal temperature. After about 10 hours, the resin will reach its ideal maximum temperature. You go and put another layer over the top that will be exaggerated in temperature by the underlying layer, which can very easily cause an exothermic runaway or flash cure. This can result in the resin distorting, smoking, losing its strength or density, cracking, etc. Always check with your resin supplier and ensure you are talking to a trained professional, not a monkey just trying to get your money.

• What is the depth I can pour to? This is important, as you may pour the resin too deep, resulting in an exothermic reaction if your room is too hot, or adverse effects if it is too cool. Our Ocean Cast can be poured to more than 35mm in depth if the room is cooler, say below 18c, but we advise staying at 35mm deep at 20c to 25c room temperature until you understand the product.
• What is the UV additive, and how long will it last? Many types of UV additives are used, some designed only to trick the eye. Most companies will tell you your resin will not start to yellow inside for the first 12 months. Resinzwood Ocean Cast is constantly evolving, and currently our High UV allows for up to 24 months outside in constant sun and decades inside under filtered light, based on testing and performance estimates.
• What is the hardness rating of the resin? There are many ways and formulas for making resin, and most resins range on a scale from D65, which is quite soft, to D90, which is very hard and scratch-resistant. Resinzwood Ocean Cast has a D90 rating once fully cured.
• How long does it take for the resin to cure? Most epoxy Deep-Pour resins take up to 72 hours to cure. If you cannot leave an indentation with your fingernail, your piece is ready to come out of the mould. Generally, we leave our resin in a high-temperature room for a few days to harden after this stage. All epoxy resins will continue to harden for months.
• What degree of heat can the resin withstand? Ok, this is a fascinating topic that I will cover on a separate page, as withstanding temps and actual temp that will not create imperfections are two different things. Many companies push this boundary by making false or incorrect claims or by stretching the truth. A resin may withstand 260F, but that does NOT mean it will NOT leave imperfections in your top. - Resinzwood Ocean Cast Epoxy: We openly tell our clients that you should not put a boiling hot cup of coffee onto your table and expect no damage, especially for the first few months of curing. Sure, our resin will withstand more than 260c, but that is a different scale. I have tables here that are over six months old and, with our specialised top coat, will be OK with hot cups of coffee once the resin is fully cured. Common sense is to use a coaster.
• Will Colours be a problem? Colours will not cause a major problem when adding them to your resin, but you should be aware of a few things. Firstly, by adding dye or powder pigments, you are changing the chemical makeup of the resin, increasing the exothermic reaction and cure time. Powders cure all resins faster, with dyes, but not so much. Add acrylic paint to resin, but never more than a 2% volume ratio. Generally, we add up to 1 teaspoon (10 grams) per litre of resin using our Colour Passion powders and dyes.
• What happens if my resin fails? It is likely your fault if your resin has problems such as sticky spots, overheating, flash cure, or failure to cure, no matter the brand. - Here at Resin Wood Tables NZ, we talk with our clients, get photos and videos, and problem-solve to ensure this does not happen again. Sometimes, it can be a manufacturing problem or a bottle mislabelled, and this has only ever occurred once with us, thank God, but it can happen. We will get you to return the product, and if we have the same issue, we will give you a New product.
